About Bruce

Hometown: Ottawa, Ontario

Born and rasied in Ottawa, Bruce McConville is the president of McConville's Garage Ltd, an auto repair shop that he started in 1981. Bruce is a two-time city council candidate for the historically francophone Vanier neighbourhood. Though he lost the race in both 2003 and 2006, he plans to redeem himself in a race against incumbent Jim Watson this year.

Public Transit

If elected, McConville would introduce "safety strips" along bus and transit routes to help people feel safer when travelling.[4]

McConville wants to review the costs of the LRT delays and determine a realistic start date for construction of the project that he says has been "shrouded in secrecy."[1][5]

Albert Street Development

Bruce McConville has expressed opposition towards this development, saying “I believe the current mayor and council do not respect communities and they do not give them voice in major development decisions. The mayor is not listening to the concerns of the communities and he is forcing them to accept development they don’t want.”[3]

Taxes

McConville wants taxes to be as low as possible, but states that if he "felt the projects and investments the city was making were worthy, I wouldn’t mind paying 2.5 or 3 per cent."[3]

Vanier

McConville opposes the Salvation Army "mega shelter." He believes that "if you put a lot of homeless people in the same place, it’s a ghetto for a community." He also believes that the shelter will deprive the community of economic development for the next 100 years.[6][7]

As a key member of a group called Concerned Citizens of Vanier, McConville worked with the police and others to rid Vanier of some of its notorious crack houses.[3]

McConville would also champion more “paddle and peddle” programs in order to lure eco-tourists to the city's waterways and bike paths.[8]
