Mark Carney was born in Fort Smith and is the first person from the Northwest Territories to become Prime Minister of Canada. Mark worked in finance for most of his career, living in cities like Boston, London, New York, Tokyo, and Toronto. In 2003, he joined the Canadian government and became deputy governor of the Bank of Canada. In 2008, at the start of the financial crisis, Mark became the Governor of the Bank of Canada. In 2013, he moved to the United Kingdom to lead the Bank of England until 2020. During the COVID-19 pandemic, Mark helped the Trudeau government by advising them on economic issues. When Prime Minister Trudeau resigned in January 2025, Mark ran for leader of the Liberal Party and won. Since the Liberal Party was in power, this made Mark the 24th Prime Minister of Canada.
